Georgian Athletics Federation was founded on 30 April 1991. On 1992 it became member of International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and European Athletics Association (EAA).
From 1991 till 2011 the president was Tamaz Mdinaradze, since 2011 till today the president is Aleksi Akhvlediani.

In the Georgian Athletics Federation, competitions are held in 3 main types - running (100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m, 10000m, 100m/h, 110 m/h, 400 m/h, 3000 steeplechase) jumps (long jump, high jump, triple jump, pole vault) throws (Shot put, Discus throw, Hammer throw, Javelin throw).
